Review Fix Exclusive: DiipSilence Talks ‘Galaxy’ And More

Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter DiipSilence who discusses her new album, “Galaxy,” as well as her creative process and goals for the rest of the year.

Review Fix: How did this project come together?

DiipSilence: I made this project after a short trip last summer to Joshua Tree National Park, while traveling I recorded some field ambiance and foley sounds like stepping on deserts etc. I edited these recordings back in my studio, the sounds immediately brought me the images of the milky way, boulders, deserts, Joshua trees and giant cacti. So I decided to make a song to freeze that unforgettable memory by using the sound recorded from there.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

DiipSilence: My creative process always begins from the scenery in my mind, I’m trying to describe a picture that can make people see what I can see. The main idea is using the sounds recorded in location to express the image. I use Ableton as my main DAW, after editing the sounds I’d like to put them into Sampler to do sound design, trying to match the sound to the imagery of the song. For this one, some of the drums are layered with the crack foley sounds, such as I’m breaking dried branches, stepping on rocks. There are lots of textures inside this track too, like keychain movements and subtle wind noise. I feel the dreamy and deep sound of hand-pan will be a perfect choice to describe the night galaxy.

Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?

DiipSilence: “Fury Tail(寒山众)” is one of my standout song, it’s a Chinese song that stayed No.1 for two weeks in Chinese Kanjian ING indie music chart. The idea comes from Classic Chinese Poetry, I’m such a fan of it. So I wrote the lyrics with ancient Chinese prose, then added some electronic music elements such as trap beats, dub synth etc. I just tried this for fun, but to my surprise, they seemed to blend well. In the bridge part I wrote a quiet melody with Chinese ancient instrument – Xiao, it’s a Chinese flute that made with Bamboo, also with me reading my favorite poem. It’s very exciting for me to explore how different elements can be mixed together without boundary, and music is always the correct answer.

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2018?

DiipSilence: I’m aiming at releasing a song per month by myself during 2018. Plan to travel more to record field sounds that can be put into my music.

Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?

DiipSilence: I want my music can make people feel “anything can be music”, I believe there is NO boundary in music. Everything has it’s own sound and everything can be musical: throwing a small stone into a pond, the sound could be a cool snare; moving a fidget spinner near a mic, the massive low end will trick you into thinking it’s an 808 sub-bass; every so-called “daily noise” is a potential gem to make music.

Review Fix: What’s next?

DiipSilence: I’m working on my new four-song EP now, each song inside this EP will describe a type of weather phenomenon. I’ll put lots of ambiance recording and foley sounds in this album as well, stay tuned for an update
