DJ Vargo EP Review: Refined Rock

Rock music has many inspirations to draw from within its own genre. There is a heavier yet unrefined tone to Punk rock however that keeps it feeling raw and unaltered. Fans of Punk value this as, there is a unique quality to an unrefined sound. While not a traditional punk rock sound, DJ Vargo channels it to create a unique and enjoyable experience rock sound.

“This Time Around” is a song with a very modern rock sound. The composition and production feel like a graduated Punk style, holding a sound the band Rise Against but with more refinement rather than an edge. This doesn’t compromise the heaviness and emphasis on the guitar. Catchy riffs keep you listening to this tale of endurance and self-reflection. Lyrics such as “made your mark, paid the price. Conquered demons never suffice” tell of him reflecting on his journey here.

“Battle Burns” is a song that takes a more western cue. The instrumentals are great and have the feeling of growth as they become louder and more robust as the track goes on. The lyrics reflect a defiant perseverance, with lines such as “gonna press on through to find the answers, even while the truth keeps glancing off your brow” hit hard. They show an attitude of a journey taken, despite the odds or even any truths as it would seem.

Overall, DJ Vargos EP has a good graduated pop-punk aesthetic. The tracks pack a punch lyrically with equally polished instrumentals that add to the overall seasoned feel of DJ Vargo. Unfortunately, the instrumental mixing clashes a bit with his raspy vocals and at some points overpower them. Despite that caveat, this is a nice listen for fans of rock in the early 2000s and Americana fans looking for more may find this one fun as well.
