Review Fix Exclusive: Muddy Wolfe’s Steve Smith Talks Origin, Goals And More

Review Fix chat with Muddy Wolfe’s Steve Smith, who lets us know all about the band’s origin, goals and signature sound.

Review Fix: How did the project start?

Steve Smith: Muddy Wolfe was actually born in Taiwan. I was living there and put a band together including Caitlin and recorded the first single The Sun Also Rises.

After returning to Australia at the start of 2018 a new band was assembled and Caitlin came back shortly afterwards. Kim Yang who is also originally from Taiwan joined the band.  We went through a couple of drummers and bass players until we found Aidan and Dean. Jonah on organ/keys fit right in from the beginning. Muddy Wolfe is Steve Smith – guitar & vocals Kim Yang – guitar & vocals Caitlin Magee – vocals Jonah Myers – keys/organ Dean James – bass Aidan Bairstow – drums

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Smith: I am the main songwriter but one song on the E.P. was written by Kim and we collaborated on the arrangement of the tune. Going forward we’ll be trying to get a full album finished by the end of the year which will be more of a collaborative effort and will be tracked live to have a more authentic in the moment vibe.

Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?

Smith: Life of a Working Man- Written and sung by Kim Yang. She wrote it for a music assignment for music school and I heard a recording of it on her own soundcloud page and I convinced her to try it with the band. We put a groove to it and a guitar riff and added a bridge. It was the one song we collaborated on the most.

What are your goals for 2019?

Smith: Apply for lots of festivals. Start on writing songs for full length album.

Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?

Smith: We hope that we connect with somebody in some way and inspire them and hope they find the time to listen to some of our stories.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Smith: Going forward we’ll be trying to get a full album finished by the end of the year which will be more of a collaborative effort and will be tracked live to have a more authentic in the moment vibe.Would love to do some mini tours to Sydney and Melbourne.
