Review Fix Exclusive:  SJae Talks “First” And More

Review Fix chats with Singer/Songwriter SJae, who discusses her origin in music and upcoming EP, “First.”

Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?

SJae: When I was 12, my Dad bought me a synthesizer with an 8 track sequencer on it, I spent hours and hours every day programming songs on this thing, which eventually led me to performing on a BBC tv show at age 15. From then, I was accepted into Richard Branson’s new school – the Brit School of Performing Arts and Technology in South London. The summer I graduated, I got a record deal with RCA Records, and I’ve been in the music industry ever since.

Review Fix: What performers inspire you the most?

SJae:Growing up, I loved Janet Jackson, Anita Baker and Cindi Lauper. I’m a huge fan of Sheryl Crow too. 2 years ago I went to FYF Festival in Los Angeles and it was the best live performance event I think I’ve ever been too. The weekend comprised of Tribe Called Quest, Nine Inch Nails, Anderson Paak, Missy Elliot, Eryka Badu, Thundercat, MGMT, it was super inspiring.

Review Fix: What’s on your musical bucket list?

SJae:I want to score a movie in full. I’ve done cues and partial scoring, I worked on a Netflix movie, ‘After Party’ last year, and I’m currently working on segments for a new movie with Tiffany Haddish. But I really want to score something in full.

Review Fix: Goals for 2019?

SJae:Start work on the second EP. Actually, FINISH the second EP!

Review Fix: What makes your music scene special?

SJae:I think my music scene is one of a few, it’s pretty diverse. But electronic music in general is always morphing and changing. There’s so much room to experiment and be bold.

Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?

SJae:Soulful electronic music with 80s and 90s influences.

Review Fix: Bottom line, what makes you special?

SJae:Honestly I think all artists that put music out are special, because it’s not easy to complete (and fund!) all the moving parts that go into making and then releasing a record. But me personally, I think what somewhat puts me in my own lane, could be that I produce my own music as well as recording it. Some of the tracks on the record I’ve mixed too.

Review Fix: What next?

SJae:Next is producing records for other artists, music for film & tv and my next record!

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

SJae:There is so much choice out there for music, anyone that spends even one minute listening to mine, when they could literally be listening to a gazillion other records, is incredibly appreciated!
