Review Fix Exclusive: Sarah McGowan Talks A Little Intimate EP And More

Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Sarah McGowan about her new EP, A Little Intimate, detailing the creative process and her goals for the future.

About Sarah McGowan:

A prolific songwriter, Sarah’s songs have been featured on NBC’s Superstore, Netflix’s Cable Girls, ABC’s Mistresses, and a trailer for CBC’s Hello Goodbye. Sarah’s music has been praised in publications such as The Huffington Post, Pop Matters, Diffuser.fm, and Elmore Magazine. Noisetrade introduced her as a “New + Notable Artist” in both 2015 and 2016 and she was awarded Pulse Music Television’s National Audience Spot- light Award in May 2016.

Review Fix: What inspired this EP?

Sarah McGowan: This EP was inspired by the experiences I had over the past three years. I’ve been through a lot—had my heart broken a few times, moved across the country, and really matured into a woman. All of these experiences have helped me grow as a person and given me a new creative perspective.

Review Fix: What makes it unique?

McGowan: The honesty and vulnerability of my voice hopefully makes the EP unique. This is definitely my most intimate release to date. But even though there are a lot of dark songs, I balance them out with more upbeat songs about summer love and ghosts. I try not to take myself too seriously!

Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?

McGowan: My music sounds like a mix between Maggie Rogers and Taylor Swift, with a little bit of Kacey Musgraves sprinkled in.

Review Fix: How was Leave You Lonely written?

McGowan: I wrote “Leave You Lonely” with writer/producer Anna Schulze over the course of a summer afternoon last year. We started with lines I had jotted down on my phone a month earlier: “It’s a little intimate, I’m a little into it”. (This later became the inspiration for the name of the EP.) It took us a while to really dig into the song and figure out what we wanted to say, but once we got to the first chorus, the song unfolded into this emotional ballad. It’s undoubtedly my favorite song on the EP…and maybe my favorite song I’ve written so far.

Review Fix: Who will enjoy this EP the most?

McGowan: I think anyone who appreciates when artists experiment with genres will like this EP. My songs run the gamut from straight up pop to country tinged ballads. The common thread are my honest lyrics and voice.

Review Fix: How do you want it to be remembered?

McGowan: I want to make music that will connect with people, and hopefully make their lives a little better. I had a friend call me the other day and tell me that my music has been helping him through a rough patch in his life, and that made my heart happy. That’s the greatest compliment an artist can ever get.

Review Fix: What’s next?

McGowan: I just signed a licensing deal with Sweets & Pop Music and am continuing to write music for myself and other artists. I’m also planning on getting back into the live music scene in Los Angeles soon.
