Everything But The Everything – Rock ‘N Roll Is A Feeling EP Review: A Definitive Statement

In this age of the DJ and the pop star, it can be tough to remember that music is a collaborative effort. In these times that can be tough, which makes “Rock ‘N Roll Is A Feeling” by Everything But The Everything feels like an extra special affair. This EP sees musician Izzy the Gent channel the power of various vocalists through him. It all comes together to create a progressive feeling for the Indie Rock genre and a great treat for rock fans.

The intro track “Intimacy feat. Luke Sweeney starts with a mysterious and smooth intro. The vocals mix with the wavy, psychedelic guitars to evoke a Scorpions style aesthetic while the percussion brings it all together with a head-bobbing beat. The bass grooves next to the guitar with confidence, making the moments they overlap exciting and move you out of your seat. The track has this nostalgic psychedelic edge that entrances you as you listen, making you feel like it spirals down before mellowing out again over and over. It’s a crazy sonic ride that must be experienced to be fully appreciated.

The stand-out track ” The Story feat. Sophia Prise” is great for showing off the versatility of the sound. The retro-inspired intro has the signature commanding percussion of the EP and the wavy guitar for a psychedelic edge. This also cements the retro aesthetic of the track to create an eclectic sound that brings that edge into the now. The vocals of Sophia Prise takes the reins as soon as they hit the track, giving it immediate sex appeal that is only complimented by the wavy guitars that groove next to them. With memorable lines such as “I look around feels like somethin’s missin’. I’m feelin’ hot while the steam is hissin’’ it’s hard to not get sucked into this track from the get-go.

These two tracks sandwich “Can’t Allow feat. Tobias Hawkins” to create a wild ride of an EP. The track immediately drops into a high-octane percussion led by a slammin’ bass drum. The bass and drums dominate the track as the raspy screams of Tobias Hawkins caress the mic until he turns to assault it. You can hear the emotion in his voice when he cries “dear love, take my hand” and when he turns during the chorus of “can’t allow! What you see. Can’t allow! What you hear.” It creates a feeling of depth and mystery when combined with the heavy instrumentals that draws you deep into its aesthetic. You might not even know you were headbanging to the hypnotic rock by the time it’s all over.

One-man band Izzy the Gent’s newest project is a triumph. Everything but the Everything proves the EP’s point in spades as you progressively listen to each track. Such collaboration is incredible, especially considering these vocalists wrote the majority of what they performed for this EP. “Rock ‘ N Roll Is A Feeling” is certainly a definitive statement, with definitive proof to back it up as Izzy allows his collaborators the use of himself and his instrumental prowess as a conduit for their expression. For the Rock fan, this EP is a must-listen as at least one of these tracks is going onto your playlist. However, “Rock ‘ N Roll Is A Feeling” is an EP that must be experienced to be believed, and for that, I recommend it to anyone.
