Children of the Plague One-Shot Review: Halfway There, But Rough Around the Edges

here’s a lot we don’t know about outer space. In fact, there could be diseases out there that could do weird things to us. Maybe even grant humans superpowers. That’s part of the plot of the one-shot comic “Children of the Plague” by Robert Love.

Remy is a “Child of the Plague,” children who were infected by a disease from outer space that gave them superpowers. She is also the current champion of a tournament where an evil corporation forces these children to fight monsters. This one shot has here in one of these fights where she is currently 40-0.

The entire comic is that one fight with some flashbacks and narration thrown in. The narration gets a little overdone with Remy constantly saying “I will kill him” and “I only have two years to live.” It quickly gets annoying. We do learn a bit about Remy and her past but the comic’s ending completely destroys that. In fact, the ending is a huge disappointment. It leaders the readers unsatisfied and wishing the ending was better than was written. Maybe two more issues or another forty pages would’ve yielded a better ending. The fight itself would’ve saved the comic but it was mediocre at best.

The artwork looks like 80s/early 90s comics that try to be edgy. Remy has eight-pack abs (sometimes. There are panels where she doesn’t.) and her hair is shaved on the sides. It’s the typical 80s/90s comics heroin. On the other hand, it is stylistically better than many comics from that era since the characters movements and backgrounds seem more natural. Of course, it’s still average.

“Children of the Plague” has a decent plot but the execution is weak with an even weaker ending and average art. With some work, say, another forty or so pages of plot and getting rid of the overuse of “I have two years to live” thing, this comic may have been better than what’s given here.
