Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Ottomatick, who discusses their new single,â€Wait a Minute.â€Â
About Ottomatick:
Ottomatick (born Gaige Otto Hermanson) came to music by way of science. Beginning his career testing children for food intolerances and eventually losing funding for a passion project intent on changing the world, he left behind the politically wrought field in search of something more. He traveled the world moving through Central and South America, finding himself inspired by the people and the places he saw along the way. Through poetry and a chance meeting with a Shaman, he discovered his next path; facilitating healing through hip-hop music — a medicine no one can regulate. And Ottomatick was born.
The “Wait A Minute†track featuring Wild Hypnotik dives deep into a scenario many of us know all too well — intense love that culminates in toxic behavior. The trilling beat mixes with Wild Hypnotiks sly, warm vocals to wash over both synth and piano for a haunting collision of sonic ups and downs. Ottomatick effortlessly defines where the line between healthy and toxic breaks, simmering in pain but calling out for more. In the coinciding video, the musicians undulate in red light surrounded by fire, an easy connection to watching your relationship and self-control burn to the ground simultaneously. As the two get trapped behind bars yet still yearn for each other, they showcase the perfect visual representation of toxic love. Ottomatick ft. Wild Hypnotik’s track “Wait A Minute†drops November 11th, 2021.
Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?
Ottomatick: My personal start to creating music started with writing poetry during my travels. I started turning poems into songs and eventually started writing over beats. Having been the most enjoyable part of my life, I chose to make it my life.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Ottomatick: I start a multitude of new songs and projects, bouncing back and forth between them as I am feeling inspired, in the mood projected the song portrays. I like to spend hours with a beat on replay getting to really feel it while I begin to write and sing lyrics. Many times, I will do this in a specific setting, on the beach, near a park, in the mountains or the city.
Review Fix: What inspired your latest single “Wait A Minute”?
Ottomatick: My most recent long-term relationship instilled in me a lesson which I felt needed to be heard. I witnessed first-hand how holding onto a relationship when you are not willing or able to give your partner all of you is draining to their well-being.
Review Fix: What was it like to work with Wild Hypnotik?
Ottomatick: Working with Wild Hypnotik is like a dream come true, she has a timeless voice talent I hope to continue to make songs with for years to come.
Review Fix: What inspires you?
Ottomatick: Much of my inspiration comes from the love I have felt, lessons I’ve learned, problems I’ve experienced, and from music that I felt deeply.
Review Fix: How has Covid affected your art?
Ottomatick: Covid gave me time to step away from society in order to look deeper into myself. The self-reflection gave me inspiration to start many new songs and projects.
Review Fix: What does music mean to you?
Ottomatick: Music gives me an opportunity to express myself, to help others, and decorate time. It gives me an opportunity to test my mental abilities, pushing myself to be a better lyricist. It’s this challenge music poses I crave, the never-ending chase for the perfection of sound and meaning.
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?
Ottomatick: It’s often a meaningful soulful vibe, while maintaining a hip-hop oriented style. For people interested in my current and future projects, I am working on experimenting with my sound by applying it to many different genres, sometimes in the same song.
Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?
Ottomatick: I treat my shows as a performance, making a high energy environment while still pulling at the emotions of my audience.
Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of 2021? What about 2022?
Ottomatick: For the rest of 2021 I will be working on singles and curating my musical abilities in order to begin work on my first album in 2022. After my album release, I plan to begin touring, playing shows.
Review Fix: What do you feel you have to do to get to the level you want to in music?
Ottomatick: To reach my next level as an artist I will need to focus on my lyrical and vocal abilities, honing them to more effectively portray lessons to help heal mass amounts of people.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Ottomatick: Stepping away from society and the distractions it poses to spend time grounding and connecting with myself and my music. I will be traveling about the west coast spending my days with nature, my dog Max, and my pen and pad.
