The “Hellboy†series has been around for decades. Throughout that time Mike Mignola has created hundreds of characters and has teamed up with plenty of artists and writers.
For the first time in a long while, Mignola goes solo in the one-shot “Sir Edward Grey: Archeron. After the events of “B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know†hell is in shambles and Sir Edward Grey has been reborn as the demon Acheron. He is also face to face with the demon Eligos who has a full-on argument and a fight throughout the comic. That’s the entire plot of the one-shot.
Of course, during this argument/fight, we do get some recap as to what happened to each character up to this point. This one-shot is also a setup for a new story called ‘Koschei The Deathless in Hell.†The back and forth argument is the most interesting part of the one-shot. Both characters are at each other’s throats throughout. The battle itself is OK. Some epic moments involve lots of damage to the surrounding area but overall it’s fine. The artwork looks like Mignola went back to his roots and drew a comic that looks like a classic “Hellboy†comic.
Of course, some of the designs are updated but besides that “Hellboy†fans will enjoy the artwork. Even though the battle is Ok, the artwork for the epic moments looks amazing. Mignola made sure that you can feel every hit and see how much destruction these two are giving what was Hell. Mike Mignola’s return to doing solo work has plenty to like and some not.
“Sir Edward Grey: Archeron†has an interesting idea with two characters going at each other with some great throwback art and it does a fine job setting up the next “Hellboy†story. The title itself sounds like it could be something epic.Â
