RPxSB and Nomadic – Shaggy Carpets EP review: A Funky Fresh Flow

There are many obstacles on the road to success. This is especially true in artistic endeavors such as music and while the success stories of the industry are well-told and known by many, it is a struggle for many to get there. This struggle isn’t all suffering, however, which the “Shaggy Carpets” EP from RPxSB (Roddy Picante and Stay-Bizzy) and producer Nomadic illustrates beautifully. The EP is a love letter to retro style hip-hop and R&B stylings, employing sensual bass grooves combined with a charismatic lyrical flow throughout to create a musically engrossing experience.

“Planet X ft. Ron Bluu” instantly plunges you into a sludgy, synth bass that instantly begins creeping into your ears. After firmly planting your feet onto Planet X, you’re swept away by a wild, free-flowing guitar that shreds you into the next track. The intro track is instantly engrossing and seamlessly leads into Shaggy Carpets.

“Shaggy Carpets” has a beat that weaves perfectly with the smooth rap from the top. The bass groove is incredibly easy to get lost in, especially with the saxophone that nails down the bluesy aesthetic. It gives the track a retro feel while the bars are full of attitude and charisma. The chorus is delivered with a heavy charisma while lines such as “I’m the problem, problem is that we ain’t lovin life. Why the Hell I’m fadin up on my own brother like, maybe it’s because I’m toxic and a thug for life” followed by “that shit’s stupid. Been conditioned way too long, I’m tryna move shit” hit hard and are contemplative in nature. These are just a few bars that make Shaggy Carpets’ sexy retro aesthetic so intoxicating and is one that will easily make it onto any hip-hop lovers’ playlist.

Sensual _ Boom Boom Room is another stand-out track. The beat creeps in on the bass, with Roddy Y Bizz keying the listener by sneaking in the line “that one sound a lil more sensual.” The beat has the signature groove and instrumental flow that gives it the retro aesthetic that permeates the EP, with some surreal synth sounds that gives the track a trippy edge. This ride lasts until about the 2 minute mark when he says “intro’s over” when the beat kicks into overdrive. The bass drops low and gets funky, while the percussions and synths take a more subtle flow. The rap flow follows and lines such as “G-funk playin, I ain’t ridin Lamborghini I be dreamin’ while she droppin low. Hallelujah, God bless her” are full of attitude and come with a delivery so buttery smooth that you’ll only see the smoke from the fire it leaves. “Sensual _ Boom Boom Room” is a track that will leave an impression and is a hard one to only listen to once.

From the top, the Shaggy Carpets EP will have you hooked. “Planet X feat. Ron Bluu” is the perfect way to suck you into the experience it has in store. Tracks such as “Shaggy Carpets” and “Sensual _ Boom Boom Room” are perfect complements to “Detrimental” and “Red Eye,” illustrating the grind that comes with the good times. While each track is united by its funky aesthetics and groovy basslines, each one also stands on its own with enough attitude and personality to separate it from the rest. This makes the Shaggy Carpets EP one you won’t want to miss.
