Review Fix Exclusive: Margo Donohue Talks ‘Filmed in Brooklyn’ and Maker Faire Coney Island

Review Fix chats with author Margo Donohue about her work and her appearance at this year’s Maker Faire Coney Island.

Review Fix: What do you make?

Margo Donohue: I am a writer with expertise in movies that were filmed in Brooklyn—everything from the silent era to Goodfellas to the Marvel Universe. I also co-host several podcasts: Book Vs. MovieDorking Out (about movies,) and What a Creep, all of which feed my curiosity about books, movies, music, and history.

Review Fix: Why do you make it?

Donohue: I have wanted to be a writer since I was young, and I have a love of pop culture and how it pertains to history (and vice versa!) I pitched a publisher to write about my neighborhood (Park Slope) when they countered with the idea to create “Filmed in Brooklyn.” I watched over 280 movies that had some connection to Brooklyn but could only finish some of them. (I have no idea how “Baby Mama” ends!)

Review Fix: What are your goals with it?

Donohue: I used it as a springboard for my current project–a book about the making of Saturday Night Fever. A more quintessential Brooklyn movie is hard to find! This is my dream gig, and I am in the middle of research and interviews. Let’s just say you can hear disco music from my apartment most days!

Review Fix: What do you plan on doing at this year’s Maker Faire?

Donohue: I will be selling copies of Filmed in Brooklyn and also looking to make contact with anyone who has a connection to the movie Saturday Night Fever.

Review Fix: Where can people find out more?

Donohue: On most social media, I am at “Brooklyn Fit Chick,” which is also the name of my site. (I taught fitness at my local Y for over 12 years.)

Review Fix: What’s next?

Donohue: Saturday Night Fever!!
