Red Velvet Chill Kill- The 3rd Album Review: Dreamy

Album: Chill Kill – The 3rd Album

Artist: Red Velvet

Released: November 11th, 2023

Red Velvet, the versatile quintet celebrated for their distinctive blend of musical genres, departs from the realms of the “ReVe Festival” to present a captivating full-length album within a span of just under a year. Renowned for their dualistic approach, wherein the “RED” concept exudes a playful and eclectic vibe, and the “VELVET” concept unveils a more mature and velvetier image, the group takes a bold step by intertwining both concepts in their latest album.

The introductory track, “Chill Kill,” sets the stage with a haunting piano melody that gradually converges into a drill beat-inspired soundscape. This title track impeccably fuses diverse elements as the group joyously chants, “I know you will bring me lightning like a winner,” juxtaposing the haunting instrumental backdrop.

“Knock Knock (Who’s There)” follows suit, commencing with an eerie group harmony to a slowed-down sample of The Nutcracker Christmas Carol. The clever infusion of a Christmas sample with a Halloween undertone, coupled with monotone vocals declaring “Knock Knock, open up the door,” creates a vivid auditory experience reminiscent of being chased in a beautifully eerie nightmare.

Transitioning seamlessly, “Underwater” introduces a soothing R&B track. The initial lyrics, “Yeah, all I need for you to stay. And forever you will sway,” undergo a rhythmic shift at the 15-second mark with the introduction of drums, conveying the sentiment, “They can’t love you like I love you.” This track showcases the group’s adeptness at playing with falsetto and breathy tones, creating a light yet emotionally resonant ambiance.

“Will I Ever See You Again?” unveils Red Velvet’s innovative use of an EDM instrumental to accentuate their robust vocals. The track gradually builds an introspective atmosphere, with the members layering low-singing vocals to pose the titular question.

The haunting soundscape persists with “Nightmare,” spotlighting Wendy’s bold vocals striking high notes while the other members contribute playful background singing. Ad-libs infuse vibrancy and fun into this captivating track.

“Iced Coffee” ingeniously matches its instrumental and title, with the opening droplets evolving into dreamlike sounds as the members sing softly, creating a flowing sensation akin to a soft drink.

“One Kiss” begins with strong guitar strums, seamlessly transitioning from low singing to confident rapping. This RED concept track exudes lightheartedness, with the catchy “Ooh-la-la-la-la, ooh-la-la-la-ley” and a playful reference to their hit song “Dumb Dumb” from the RED concept album “The Red.”

In “Bulldozer,” Red Velvet once again aligns their sound with the song title, harmonizing with the instrumental to mimic a revving vehicle. This track masterfully blends elements of both RED and VELVET concepts, with the members joyously singing morbid lyrics like, “I desperately look around to break this inescapable nightmare.”

The album takes a turn with the inspiring message of “Wings,” the first track conveying a more uplifting tone. Vocal layering, a signature element of the group, is evident in the harmonious beginning of this track, encouraging listeners to spread their wings and keep moving forward.

“Scenery” gently incorporates soft guitar strums and whimsical voices, bringing an end to the sensory roller coaster. In “Chill Kill,” Red Velvet not only invites listeners to embrace the duality of their sound and unique concepts but also showcases why they are trailblazers in K-pop.

Unafraid to experiment, the group plays to their strengths, resulting in an album that transcends conventions. It’s a musical experience that goes beyond the ordinary.

As a person who has never listened, I’m intrigued simply because of how detailed and different each song seems to be—but it simply isn’t because of that alone.
