Review Fix Exclusive: Q & A With Incubus Drummer Jose Pasillas

Review Fix chats with Incubus drummer Jose Pasillas, who discusses his new art project, “Abstract + Rhythm Landscapes” where “drumsticks are paintbrushes and canvas becomes a vessel of sound through the innovations.” For fans of his work with the band over the last 20 years, it’s a different, but welcome side to the alternative star.

Review Fix: When did you begin dabbling in art?

Jose Pasillas:
I began drawing from a very young age. I always had pencils and pads of paper with me. When I was in grade four, I started noticing I could draw pretty well, and just never stopped. Eventually I started using pen and ink and then Prisma colors in high school. After high school I went to Jr. College and took some basic drawing and painting courses and started painting at that time.

Review Fix: What was the influence behind this project?

Pasillas: The influence behind this project was the project from SceneFour, “The Art Of Drums.” They asked me if I was interested and I jumped at the chance to be part of an elite group of drummers who had participated in this particular project in the past.

Review Fix: It’s cool how the photos and music are so interconnected. How do you put these pieces together?

Pasillas: Music and art definitely go hand in hand in my world. This project was a perfect way of showcasing music and rhythm captured into beautiful abstract visual pieces.

Review Fix: How you believe this project will influence or affect your music career?

Pasillas: This project only has deepened my love for the arts, whether it is music or visual arts. Again, it’s just an extension of my creative side and another chapter of my work. There will definitely be more chapters to come, musically and visually.

Review Fix: What do the other members of Incubus think of it?

Pasillas: To be honest, I don’t know if all the members of my band are aware of this project. Brandon is aware and said that he really enjoyed, “Reign of Fire.” He said that it reminded him of dragons, which to me is right on the mark. Dragons are cool.

Review Fix:
Have you thought of switching to doing this full-time?

Pasillas: When I am not out on a touring cycle, I am at home being a full-time father, drummer and artist.

Review Fix: How do you want your art to be remembered?

Pasillas: I am not sure how I want my art to be remembered. I guess I would like to think that I have created something visually stunning. Art that, like my music, is thought-provoking and inspiring.

Review Fix: What do you think the future holds for you as an artist?

Pasillas:
As far as the future of my art, I know that I will always continue to paint and create visual art. I hope to also continue to make art for those who enjoy what I do and those who have been so supportive of this project. To know that people have put pieces of my work on there wall is the ultimate complement to me.
