Ivar, Timewalker #2 Preview: Doctor ‘Who’?

Time travel stories have been in the mainstream ever since H.G. Wells wrote “The Time Machine.” Some are well made (“Back to the Future”) others are not so lucky. One is Valiant Comics’ series “Ivar, Timewalker.” The preview to the second issue makes this series look like it’s treading very familiar territory.

The preview shows us Ivar, along with his time traveling companion Neela, scoping out the Carboniferous Period. They also do a lot of the typical time travel talk you see in these stories.

The preview makes this story read like it’s a “Doctor Who” ripoff. The main character is an experienced time traveler, he has a female assistant, has a quirky personality, speaks in techno babble and has a plan that had to do with traveling back in time. All that’s left is to give him a sonic screwdriver and a Tardis and the look is complete. Of course, this can only be coincidence. The full story may have some original ideas and even be memorable, but right now it looks like a copy and paste job.

The art seems to be the only thing this comic has going for it. As is the norm for Valiant comics, the art is top notch. The character designs looks well drawn and refined, the backgrounds are nice to look at and lively and the attention to detail is a nice finish.

The preview for the second issue of “Ivar, Timewalker” does not look promising. With a story that has way too much in common with a “Doctor Who” episode this may enrage some people. It is too early to know if this may only be an early reaction or the full comic will be like this. AT least the art is still held at the highest standard that Valiant has had for years now.
