Review Fix: What was the inspiration for the production? How did it all come together?
Aaron Michael Krueger: I started writing the show in 2012, and the show went up in the Midtown International Theatre Festival last summer. For this particular production, the show went through a year of some much needed rewrites and edits, a whole lot of living room readings, and we’ve come up with something really special. Everyone from the cast, the musicians, the creative team and seamstresses has brought their A game and produced a show that I couldn’t be more proud of.
Review Fix: What do you think you’ve learned about yourself through this whole process?
Krueger: I get stressed very easily. Don’t worry, that’s not what I learned; I’ve known that for a very long time. What I’ve learned is to keep pushing through and keeping going (and not to be afraid to ask for help) because things will work themselves out and everything will get done.
Review Fix: Who do you think will enjoy it the most?
Krueger: While I don’t want to sound cliche, I think there is something for everyone in this show. We obviously play towards an audience who enjoys comic books and superhero films, but there’s a really moving (though sometimes dark) coming of age story that everyone can relate to.
Review Fix: Tell me about the cast. What makes them so special?
Krueger: The cast is absolutely phenomenal. I could go on for days about how talented they all are, but I think what’s more impressive is how supportive they all are. They’ve all bonded in a way that is really beautiful to watch, and the relationships of the characters truly feel like something deeper than just actors on a stage; it’s a group of people who legitimately care for each other, and I lucked out because of all of them.
Review Fix: What’s your favorite element of the show?
Krueger: I think the music is (sometimes unfortunately) catchy and has the ability to move people. But what’s written on the page only goes so far; what the cast has done with this score has been one of the most thrilling elements of this production.
Review Fix: Bottom Line. Why should someone see this show?
Krueger: There isn’t anything else like this show. Actually though, it is a one of a kind show that will have you laughing, crying, and feeling like you can fly. It’s a very special piece of theatre.
Review Fix: How do you want the production to be remembered?
Krueger: I’d like this production to be remembered by the performances that were given. If there’s a standout element of this production, it’s the performances that each and every actor is giving on stage. I’ve been choking back tears in rehearsals for weeks because they’re all so amazing.
