Review Fix Exclusive: Starla Starshine Talks ‘Red Lagoon’ And More

Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Starla Starshine to see what inspired her new song, EP and album, “Red Lagoon,” as well as her creative process and goals for the future.

Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?

Starrla Starshine: My greatest love as a child was the 60s music. My favorite people were the singers and songwriters, the alpha males. I was 13 when my mom sat me down and told me I could write a song like them. That’s the moment it all started and I haven’t stopped since.

Review Fix: What’s been the biggest lesson you’ve learned in music so far?

Starshine: That a lot of people can play an instrument but not as many can write a good lyric. Especially one that says a complex feeling simply.

Review Fix: What did you listen to growing up?

Starshine: The 60s.

Review Fix: For many indie musicians, their cover work is lacking and that makes it difficult to attract casual listeners. You, on the other hand, have a beautiful album cover. Who did it? How does it connect to your sound?

Starshine: : Thank you, that’s so sweet. For me the visuals are as important as the music. In my song Red Lagoon, I sing about a mermaid with a fin of fire. The album cover is exactly that. An artist named Olivia created it. You can find her on Instagram and lalasdreambox.com

Review Fix: How was “Red Lagoon” written? 

Starshine: Half of it I wrote at 16 and the other half I wrote in the studio the same day I was scheduled to record something. It just came to me. It is the song of my life that I love most.

Review Fix: What makes this new round of tunes special for you?

Starshine: They are my most personal. They are a look into my soul.

Review Fix: What are your long-term goals in music?

Starshine: To be the best songwriter I can be and to touch broken hearts.

Review Fix: How do this EP and upcoming album help you get there (to your goals)?

Starshine: This record is my child. It is my blood, sweat and tears. The goal was to create something that truly spoke for my soul. Red Lagoon does exactly that.

Review Fix: Bottom line, why does your music matter?

Starshine: Because I am the voice of death and rebirth. Starla is the light and if you ever feel like dying just know you’ve got one more song in you. That song can save a life.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Starshine: Releasing my EP this month.

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

Starshine: I am here to embrace and dance with the freaks, outcasts and the broken-hearted. My music is for us. I do it only for you.
