Review Fix Exclusive: Captain Dane-O Talks Beginnings and ‘Something From Nothing’

Review Fix took a moment to catch up with one-man band Captain Dane-O off the release of his debut album, “Monster in the Addict.” What we got was a look into his roots, passion for graphic art, and what comes next for this eclectic musician.

Review Fix: You started out in music in a band, but slowly transitioned to a one-man act. Would you ever consider going back to playing in a full-fledged band?

Captain Dane-O: Yes, I play with different musicians here and there. It just starts to become schedule conflicts ect. The old saying goes “being in a band is kind of like being in a marriage”. It just seems to be more productive and easier to assemble on my own. I just love playing music! So with or without others I’ll still be playing ; )

RF: Most of your music has a very dark quality to it, is that the flavor of “Monster in the Addict” or was the aesthetic adopted more due to necessity?

Captain Dane-O: I started out in an adolescent Punk/Rock band. Even as that band matured we maintained the Punk/Rock roots. I think that Dark feel will always be present from an emotional aspect.

RF: Monster in the Addict has a very psychedelic flavor, who would you say were your biggest musical inspirations for this album?

Captain Dane-O: Too many to mention! It was definitely an evolution of influence. You could probably break it down, but not limited to, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Hendrix, Grateful Dead, Primus, Mr. Bungle, even some Reggae Dub Stuff. I love experimental Jazz like Coltrain and John Zorn, the list goes on and on…… and thats just the psychedelic flavor LOL…

RF: What is the track you are most proud of on Monster in the Addict and why?

Captain Dane-O:  I’m most proud of the album in a whole. Picking one song is kind of like picking a favorite child. Each song was its own journey that I loved experiencing. It’s always interesting to me what songs other people like and why. This gives me alternate perspective, like looking through a different lens!

RF: In addition to a musician, you are also a painter as seen by your piece on your website. Is it fair to say that your music and artwork are reflective of each other?

Captain Dane-O: The ART is actually Graphic Design! I’m so happy that it comes across as a painting! That’s what I was going for… Yes, the music and the art are reflective of each other and an attempt to characterize the expression. I love this question, thank you!!!

RF: With Monster in the Addict in the books using your signature one-man band style, what other sounds are you experimenting for your next album?

Captain Dane-O: The Turntables really open up so many possibilities. A little more orchestral and electronic sounds are becoming more present. Yet all in all the new material reflects the old. Just dialing it in and evolving…

RF: All things considered, art and music, what’s next for Captain Dane-O?

Captain Dane-O: A new Album “Something From Nothing” is currently in the works. More video will be captured. Everything evolved together so nicely. The Producing, the Writing, the Musicality, even the Art. Each step kinda inspires the next step. It’s been an exciting ride!!! Looking forward to riding the wave.
