Review Fix chats with Pacific Estate’s Cam Hart (Lead Vocals and Guitar), who discusses the band’s origin and goals, as well as their new single, Saturdays.
Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?
Cam Hart: Our parents definitely pushed us towards music when we were really young. I got my first guitar around 8 years old, I believe Grady started drumming way earlier then that. We all got into bands early in life as well, through school, with friends, and at the places we took lessons. Grady and I played hockey together in Grade 5 and when we ended up at the same high school he asked if I was still playing guitar, and the rest is history.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Hart: Our creative process is a bit different for every song. It usually starts with an idea that someone has, whether it’s a riff, a chorus, or even a line, and then I’ll put some words to it, and slowly evolve the idea into a song. Some songs I write entirely on my own, some Grady writes on his own and some we write together.
Review Fix: What inspires you?
Hart: A lot of my inspiration come from the desire that one day my songs will have the same impact on other people’s lives that music has had on mine.
Review Fix: What does music mean to you?
Hart: Music is a way we can express our lives, experiences and feelings through creativity. It has always been a major outlet for all of us, through the highs and lows of life. Music means the world to all of us, we have it on at all times. It’s almost impossible to imagine a world without it.
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?
Hart: We write genre-less rock songs. We draw influence from all genres, and try to portray the most interesting elements of each wrapped up in rock songs. We don’t have any gimmicks: We are two guitars, a bass, drums and vocals. We write songs to catch the modern ear, but stick to our roots in delivering that ‘no BS’ rock and roll experience that people have loved for decades.
Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?
Hart: The energy. We try our absolute best to capture that same energy on the record but it’s almost impossible to recreate. Our live shows are very energetic, hectic; some might say over the top. We record songs one way, but like to expand on the original ideas when we play live through deep breakdowns, alternative endings, crowd engagement, and so on. We really do have two versions of every song we write. We set the tone early, and go full out no matter the show, venue or audience. People generally leave our gigs a little sweaty to say the least.
Review Fix: What inspired your latest single?
Hart: Saturday’s is an ode to our friends. It’s about having a good time and not feeling bad about it. This was one of those songs that almost wrote itself. It came together so quickly and became one of our favourite songs we’ve made.
Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of 2020?
Hart: We’re heading into the Arc Recording Studio this week to get back to work with producer Julius Butty. We’re doing six more songs, and by the end of the session we will have a completed record. After getting the record done we have to figure out how to get it out as fast as possible. We’re so happy with these songs and we cannot wait for you all to hear them.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Hart: Times are strange right now so unfortunately we can’t tour the upcoming record and the recent singles however we are holding out home that we can get on the road towards the beginning of next year. In the meantime were working on upping our online presence, releasing content on YouTube as much as we can. Aswell, were always working out new songs and new ideas.
