Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Ny’a, who discusses her origin in music, new single, Waiting- and much more.
About Ny’a:
An unstoppable force in indie R&B music since her re-emergence in 2015, Ny’a has topped the World Indie and Euro Indie Charts countless times, hit the R&B Soul Chart and Club Music Chart Top 20 and became the first artist since Janet Jackson to hit #1 for three consecutive years on the RnB Souleffect-TV chart (2018-20) with her hits “You Don’t Really Love Me,†“304,†“Mend,†“Don’t Judge Me†and “We Are Strong.†With her latest single, the sultry and sensual, easy grooving “Waiting,†the multi-talented New Jersey based vocalist and songwriter meets our collective moment perfectly, reflecting our cautious hopes as we look ahead and move past the pandemic era towards a brighter day.
Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?
Ny’a: I’ve always been around music. My mom loved music. Especially old school R & B like Sam Cooke, Otis Reading, and other artist like that. Professionally, I would say, after my college years, my now husband encouraged me to take my music to the next level. We started our own label, Nap Records with major distribution, and the rest was history.
Review Fix: You have an amazing voice. You could sing anything. Why R&B?
Ny’a: Thank you.. I appreciate that. Waiting has that smooth R & B vibe, but I have released all genres of music throughout my career. My latest album “Something for Everybody” has a little bit of everything on it. House music, slow jams, pop, r & b/hip-hop etc.
Review Fix: How are you a different singer than you were 10 years ago?
Ny’a: Like all artist, with time, comes growth and maturity. I’ve grown in my music. My music is more mature and meaningful, and thought provoking.
Review Fix: What kind of singer would you like to be 10 years from now?
Ny’a: Hopefully I will still be relevant in this music world. It’s been a long journey, and I’m not ready for it to end anytime soon. I would love to give a big concert and perform all of my songs in front of a large stadium of fans. That would be epic!
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Ny’a: Melodies and hooks, for the most part, come to me pretty easily. Sometimes while driving a melody will come to my head. I’ll pull over and record it on my phone, head home and start to write. Thank goodness for modern technology.
Review Fix: What inspires you?
Ny’a: Life events that are meaningful inspire me. Moments in time. that I can capture on paper and bring to life in song.
Review Fix: What does music mean to you?
Ny’a: Music means everything to me. It’s a way to express myself.
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?
Ny’a: I think my sound is authentic, and soulful.
Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?
Ny’a: Fun Fun Fun, the stage is where you get to be your most creative, you can connect with your audience. I absolutely love to perform. The stage is where you let it all hang out. Studio time is more serious, although we do have some fun in the studio.
Review Fix: What inspired your latest single, Waiting?
Ny’a: After such a trying time last year, I thought of how some people have been waiting for peace, or for that special someone or something to complete them. Everyone, at some time or another has waited for something or someone to make them whole. I wanted to encourage people that its ok to wait patiently.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2021?
Ny’a: I want to try to work on an EP and also try to find a way to get back on stage. Try, is the key word, hopefully things will slowly but surely get back to as close to normal as possible.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Ny’a: I’m definitely going to be working on new music. who knows maybe another album? In the meantime, I’m going to keep promoting Waiting and possibly a video for Waiting.
Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?
Ny’a: I just hope that I can continue to make good music that moves people. I’m very thankful for the career that has lasted me more than a decade.
