WWE RAW Coverage: Rumblings Before the Royal

With Royal Rumble less than a week away, the WWE did something they haven’t done in a while, they built up enough drama to make you want to pay for a pay per view. With a good-sized card and enough storyline development, Royal Rumble 2014 looks to be one of the better WWE pay per views of the year, as it should be.

Matches:

Intercontinental Champion Big E. Langston and WWE Tag Team Champions Cody Rhodes and Goldust vs. United States Champion Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns: A solid opener with plenty of action. Rhodes was up to his usual high-flying antics through the early part of the match, but The Shield rebounded and used quick tags to get control. After Rhodes hit Reigns with the Disaster Kick, Langston went on a tear too, but a Superman Punch from Reigns and Rollins’ unique Stomp-style finisher earned The Shield the win.

Fandango w/Summer Rae vs. Xavier Woods w/R-Truth: Fandango made quick work of Woods with the Guillotine Leg Drop from the top rope for the win.

CM Punk vs. Billy Gunn w/ Road Dogg: This was essentially a two-on-one, but Punk was up to the task. Although Punk eventually won with the GTS, Gunn was solid, hitting his trademark offense with style and precision. The guy has some gas left.

Rey Mysterio vs. Alberto Del Rio: Both of these former World Champions traded offense in what was ultimately a pretty standard encounter. After 15 minutes of back and forth action and a plethora of near-falls, Del Rio won with the Arm-Breaker. After the match, Del Rio was Powerbombed by Batista.

Divas Champion AJ Lee and Tamina Snuka vs. Naomi and Cameron: A terrible match that saw Naomi Roll Up Lee for a “shocking” win. What a joke. Lee and the division deserve better than this.

Erick Rowan and Luke Harper w/Bray Wyatt vs. Jimmy and Jey Uso: The Family simply destroyed the Usos here, but they never gave up. After about 15 mins of action however, Wyatt began to yammer on the microphone about how he would destroy Daniel Bryan at Royal Rumble. After the verbal tirade, the Usos got back in the match with some High-Flying drama, but Harper nearly won with a Michinoku Driver. After the near-fall, Bryan jumped Wyatt from behind and with Harper distracted, Jimmy Uso rolled him up for the win.

WWE World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton vs. Kofi Kingston: Another good back and forth match until John Cena interrupted and beat the holy hell out of Orton, in a scrap that continued into the crowd and outside.
