Patrick Hickey Jr.: What was the inspiration for this game?
Sean Hogan: It started as a response to our previous game, Anodyne. The way we make simple spaces in Even the Ocean interesting, by using the energy bar mechanic and simple interactable objects, was inspired by how we realized that in Anodyne, simple combat could make a boring, empty screen interesting.
The decision to more carefully pace Even the Ocean with alternating, mutually reinforcing stretches of platforming and story development, was inspired by our observation that Anodyne did not successfully communicate the themes we wanted it to.
