Review Fix Exclusive: Deanna Petcoff Talks ‘Stage Lights’ And More

Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter and guitarist Deanna Petcoff to find out what fueled her newest single.

Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?

Deanna Petcoff: I’ve been playing music professionally for 8 years now. I started playing in a band called Pins & Needles in the summer between ninth and tenth grade and have been playing and writing music ever since. Pins & Needles disbanded in 2018 and I began my solo project.

Review Fix: What inspires you?

Petcoff: I’m inspired by many things in my life and in the life of my friends. My catchphrase for this project is “happy songs about sad things” and I think that holds true through most of my music. When I’m happy I don’t feel the need to write, but I use it at a type of catharsis and a way to sort out my thoughts.

Review Fix: What are your goals in music?

Petcoff: I would like as many people as possible to hear my songs and feel something from them. All I want is for people to have an emotional reaction and see themselves in the music.

Review Fix: How was “Stage Lights” written?

Petcoff: Stage Lights was written late at night in my parents basement after seeing a show. I imagined a story in which one of the members of the band and I had begun a courtship (if you will) and how it would play out. The story of Stage Lights is just a fantasy, but for so many touring musicians it is real life.

Review Fix: What was filming the video like?

Petcoff: There is no video for Stage Lights but hopefully there will be soon!

Review Fix: Why is it a special song for you?

Petcoff: This song is special because I allowed myself to go out of my comfort zone with the storytelling aspect. I think of this song as a verb instead of an adjective—its active. It has a timeline. Most of my songs don’t have that, theyre about sitting in the moment and in your feelings. Stage Lights takes you through the years.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Petcoff: I’ll be releasing another single later this summer in preparation for my debut record!

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

Petcoff: Please go listen to my other singles if you like this one and follow me for updates on Instagram and Facebook!
