Review Fix Exclusive: Lisa Nicole Talks ‘Wait On Me’ And More

Review Fix chats with singer Lisa Nicole, who discusses her new single, “Wait On Me,” as well as her new podcast and goals for 2020.

Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?

Lisa Nicole: That’s a slightly loaded question. At age 9, I had my first taste of performing in front of anyone at JB’s Karaoke! It wasn’t until age 15 that I started regularly singing in local bars at jam nights. My parents would take me three times a week around the area to perform. After graduating from Selkirk College Music School I moved to Vancouver, BC. I paid $75 for a consultation from someone in the music industry to get a sense of where to start. I started networking, going to the Canadian Country Music Week every year and I would literally bring my laptop to every panel and seminar and be that annoying person that asked so many questions. Since then, I’ve lived in Toronto and attended Canada’s Music Incubator and most recently in Nashville before returning home to record new music – starting with my new single, “Wait on Me”!

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Nicole: I love collaborating with other writers, artists, and people in general. I’m not much for writing alone. Whenever I get an idea I write it down on my Notes app. My favorite place to be creative is Nashville, where I’m not distracted by anything at home and can completely focus on writing. For me, it’s almost like a switch. I have to often switch between the business marketing woman to the creative artist.

Review Fix: What inspires you?

Nicole: Life inspires me! When you look around, there are stories everywhere. I write mostly about my own experiences. But, the only two heartbreak songs on my next album are not break-up/sad love songs – they’re two personal songs I wrote about one of my best friends and my mom.

Review Fix: What does music mean to you?

Nicole: Connections that warm your heart. That’s the first thing that comes to mind. Whether it’s from an artist’s perspective when you can connect with fans or as a listener, when you can connect with a song that brings you back to a special moment. It’s all about the connection.

Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?

Nicole: Country rock/pop. My new sound has a bit more of a pop edge to it yet it still keeps some of those old school country instruments like a banjo and steel guitar. My voice has matured and really become my own in the last few years, since living in Nashville and singing every day. I feel that it really comes through in “Wait on Me” as well as in my other new material that’s coming this year.

Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?

Nicole: Oh, I love playing live! I love getting on the stage and connecting with my fans. We often change the songs live to create magical moments. At the last show, I was twirling people from the stage. Those spontaneous moments I love. I like to change the setlist slightly depending on the crowd and venue. Feedback from the crowd is the best feedback. I always sneak in a few cover songs because the crowd always wants to hear something they really recognize.

Review Fix: What inspired your latest single?

Nicole: I wanted to write a song about the struggle of balancing a relationship back at home, and having a career. My partner at home supports me being away and pursuing my dream, but that doesn’t mean it’s always easy. I think with every relationship where someone travels, there are always insecurities. The lyrics in the song “wait on me till it all hits home” is saying to him “You’ve been along my side for this long, wait on me a little longer.”

The other inspiration was Nashville. I had an opportunity a few years ago to sing a duet with Keith Urban at a Nashville pop-up concert. It was part of what led me back there to live in 2018 where I wrote “Wait on Me”.

So my personal relationships and my musical dreams were equal inspirations in making this song a reality.

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2020?

Nicole: “Wait on Me” is my best song. As an independent artist, it’s hard to break through on radio and get on major festivals. With this song, that’s my goal for 2020. And to promote my new music by touring and connecting with more fans. Therefore, I’m super grateful for the outlets like yours that are interested in sharing my music.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Nicole: Big plans! We are planning to release my new album later this year. More touring, more releases to radio, more music videos – all the fun stuff that comes with releasing new music!

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

Nicole: I started a podcast called Wild Hearts! Super excited about it. I cover topics such as behind the songs, the music business, health and fitness and lifestyle. Some titles so far have been “How The Music Industry Can Make You Feel & 5 Reasons For A Hit Song”“Singing With Keith Urban, Travelling and Living In Nashville” and “Peanut Butter, Crossfit And An Eating Disorder”.
