Discomfort Underneath – No Lonely Days Review: A Heartfelt Performance

Conveying emotions in a meaningful way can be challenging. It’s hard to put powerful feelings into words and even tougher to put it into a song. Feelings such as longing, loneliness and the melancholy they bring are overpowering and are easy to obsess over. It’s tough to make a promise to someone you care about, even if you can’t quite make it your way. Discomfort Underneath creates a heartfelt sound that’s full of emotion for their first single, No Lonely Days.

The contemplative acoustic guitar intro is soft, which helps the warm crooning ease in. The feeling of longing is solidified before the first drums hit when he hits you with the line “if I had my way, there’d be no lonely days.” When the tempo picks up, the percussion adds a light pulse to the track. The vocal performance is front and center, the warm crooning giving way to a few powerful moments that shine through. This is especially true towards the end of the track, with the emotion coming through when he cries “someday, I will stay!” The solid backup vocals add a harmonic echo to the performance, allowing these moments to pack a punch when they hit.

The instrumentals are soft and do well to prop up the vocals, though they feel a bit reserved. Each time it feels like the percussion is about to land hard, it seems to peter out instead. The lyrics are also a bit underwhelming. While moments of power are uplifting and the vocals may give some an earworm, they don’t give a lot to latch on to other than the sense of longing that is channeled by the track.

Discomfort Underneath’s first single is emotional and full of heart. The vocal performance is warm and plays off the instrumentals well, giving the song a heartfelt aesthetic. No Lonely Days is a good jumping-off point for Discomfort Underneath. While the song isn’t too lyrically deep, they nail the aesthetic of warm-hearted melancholy. No Lonely Days is a solid freshman single that gives the group a defined sound to work with for their future endeavors.
