Review Fix Exclusive: Jeffrey Burandt Talks Killer Bad And More

Review Fix chats with Killer Bad creator Jeffrey Burandt, who discusses his origin in comics and his current Kickstarter.

About Killer Bad:

KILLER BAD is a brand new, superhero-horror comic book series with ’90’s comix flair! Each issue is a done-in-one story reflecting a different horror genre through the superhero lense, but with connective tissues of plot and character that run through the entire series. And you can start at the beginning right now with issue #1!

For more on Killer Bad, head to the Kickstarter, Here.

Review Fix: How did you know a career in comics was for you?

Jeffrey Burandt: As soon as I finished grad school, I got a series of comics that ran as a serial advertisement for Amstel Light in the pages of Details Magazine, and then shortly after that, I signed a publishing deal with Oni Press that resulted in my first book, Odd Schnozz & the Odd Schnozz, with Dennis Culver and Ramon Villalobos. I’ve been fighting to get published every year, every day since! I dunno, I just like making comics.

Review Fix: Who inspires you creatively?

Burandt: Fyodor Dostoevsky, Vladamir Nabokov, Matt Fraction, Jane’s Addiction.

Review Fix: How are your comics different or special?

Burandt: I’m always told that my comics are weird, so that’s cool, right? I think with anything I make, I really succeed at making a professional product that can sit side by side with the biggest names in the business, but that’s mostly due to my collaborators, who are pros themselves.

Review Fix: What about this comic? Sell us. Sell us hard.

Burandt: Killer Bad is a superhero horror comic book! When an elite super-group travels to a remote island to retrieve a powerful artifact, they are stalked and killed by a super-slasher, serial killer. It’s kinda like Friday the 13th meets The Boys.

Each issue is a done-in-one story reflecting a different horror genre through the superhero lense, but with connective tissues of plot and character that run through the entire series. And you can start at the beginning right now with issue #1!

And we’ve got variant covers, including an homage to the Friday the 13th movie poster by artist Paul Ciaravino! If we make a certain stretch goal, we’re going to make that one glow in the dark.

Review Fix: Who do you think will dig it the most?

Burandt: Fans of ‘90s comics, early Image, horror, and superheroes. I think it has a very Garth Ennis vibe, and artist Jason Goungor is painting it to look like the side of a Capcom vs. X-Men coin-op video game.

Review Fix: How do you want your books to be remembered?

Burandt: I want my books to be fun and exciting and be known for having satisfying plots. For making you go, “oh sh*t,” when you turned that page. I also usually want you to root for the bad guy.

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

Burandt: You gotta check out our Kickstarter video. We teamed up with filmmaker Darin Murano and made a shot-for-shot remake of the Spike Lee directed, 501 Jeans Commercial, originally starring Rob Liefeld. It’s pretty great. All the bed music was produced by my rock band, Americans UK.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Burandt: Don’t tell anyone, but artist Sean Von Gorman and I have an unannounced book together that we can’t talk about yet. It’s a sci-fi horror book. I think we’re going to make people cry when they read it.

Review Fix: Where can people find out more?

Burandt: You can go now and pledge to our Kickstarter until 9/1/21 at KillerBad.com and you can find my other work on my website at JefWrites.com, and you can check out my sci fi rock band at Americans-UK.com
